Memorial Home of Alojzije Stepinac

Krašić, Krašić
Tel: 01/6270-703, 6270-003

The Memorial Home of Alojzije Stepinac was arranged in the old parish hall. Pilgrims coming to Krašić, especially Croatian emigrants and other visitors, visit this small house of ancient rural architecture, typical for the Krašić area. There, cardinal Alojzije Stepinac found refuge after having been released from the prison in Lepoglava in 1951 until his death on February 10, 1960. The Communist government did not allow him to visit his birthplace in the village Brezarić, not even two kilometers away from Krašić, so he arranged his home and work in the parish hall, the present Memorial Home, although under the constant supervision of the on-call police officers, in his study-bedroom with the simplest furniture and only the bare essentials. Over his wooden bed was his dearest and most valuable painting of the Mother of God, to whom his mother Barbara regularly prayed, as well as the entire Stepinac family in their family home in Brezarić. The Memorial Home's various collection of items, paintings, photographs, books, notes has a historical, cultural and ethnological value. The Memorial Home is warm, filled with memories and tells the story of Stepinec's martyrdom, his faith and thoughts of the Croatian people and their destiny.
